Naturopathic Tip of the Month:
Preventing &
Treating Summer Insect Bites/Stings
Whether
they are from black flies, mosquitoes, spiders or bees
summertime bug bites/stings can get in the way of fully
enjoying the outdoors. Try the following tips and consult
your Naturopathic Doctor for other helpful ways to prevent
and treat insect bites and stings.
To Prevent:
- wear
protective clothing (i.e. a wide brimmed hat and light
coloured outerwear)
- apply
diluted tea tree oil or citronella oil to exposed areas
of skin
To Treat:
- to ease
the itch, apply lavender essential oil to the area
- to
decrease inflammation and pain of stings, apply the
juice of the stinging nettle plant or a dab of baking
soda and water
-
homeopathic medicine: Ledum is commonly used for bites
and stings that are cold to the touch yet better with
cold application
- Staphysagria is great for children who’s mosquito bites
are itchy, large and have a tendency to create welts.
