Chiropractic Tip of the Month: Flexibility – Why Stretch?

Stretching is recommended for everyone, regardless of age or flexibility.

By stretching you will:

  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Improve coordination and body awareness
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion
  • Reduce the risk of strain from unexpected over-stretch
  • Improve circulation
  • Prepare for other physical activities

Important Points to Remember:

  • Attempt to integrate stretching into your daily routine.
  • Always warm up first.
  • Do not hold your breath while stretching. Each stretch can be held for 4-8 deep breaths.
  • Do not strain. The stretch should always be comfortable.
  • Return to neutral slowly.
  • Never change position quickly after a stretch is completed, or muscle spasm may occur.
  • An average stretch routine should require approximately 15 minutes.

Naturopathic Tip of the Month: Time for a Supplement Break?

Many of us take a variety of supplements. Some which are essential to health concerns and others that augment a healthy diet and exercise regime. It is of benefit, at least once per year, to give the body a break and cease certain supplements (ie multivitamin, vit c) for approximately 1 week to 1 month.

When’s the best time? When stressors in your life are lessened (ie summer vacation). Supplements still need to be detoxified by the liver and removed by the gastrointestinal tract. Ceasing intake for a limited time lifts this burden off the liver and GI tract allowing them to focus on other aspects of health (ie. keeping the immune system high for the fall).

Keep in mind though that it’s extremely important to discuss this supplement break with your Naturopathic Doctor first in order to determine, which, if any of your supplements warrants a break.
