Chiropractic Tips of the Month: Summer is Shaping Up
If you’ve been inactive over the winter, it’s easy to cause an injury whether you’re gardening, playing tennis or simply taking a hike. Exercise is very beneficial for your entire body – including your back. Weight-bearing activities such as hiking, brisk walking, stair climbing and dancing all strengthen your bones, muscles and joints and may help protect you against osteoporosis, a serious disease that results in deterioration of bone mass, especially in older people. Even a little activity three to four times a week can go a long way to improving your overall health and well-being.
Your chiropractor can provide you with advice and exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles so you can be free of pain regardless of your activity. It is a good idea to consult a chiropractor before beginning a new fitness program in order to receive guidance about the kind of activities that would most benefit you.
Gardening Tips:
Stretch Before You Start: Warming-up your muscles with stretches before going into the garden
helps to reduce the stress and strain on your joints and muscles, reducing the chance of injury.
Bend Your Knees to Lift with Ease: When lifting, keep your back straight and bend your knees.
Always carry the load close to your body. Always pivot and avoid twisting.
The right tools, the right moves: Use the right tools and moves for the job. Kneel to plant and
change positions frequently when raking, digging, hoeing or pruning. Use ergonomically designed,
long handled, lightweight tools.
Take a Break Before It Aches: As a rule-of-thumb, take a brief rest or stretch break at least three
times each hour, and drink fluids frequently.

Naturopathic Tip of the Month: Deciphering Bad Plastics
With so much new information regarding the safety of plastics and Bisphenol A (BPA), it’s hard to know what to believe. We all want what’s best for not only our health but our children and grandchildren’s health as well. So how do you know what plastics are ‘safe’? Below are a few simple tips to help you understand and avoid the most common sources of BPA’s in plastics to decrease the toxic load on the body.
- Everyone is exposed to BPA (a synthetic compound classified as a hormone disrupter). Exposure has been linked to such effects as; permanent changes to the genital tract, decreasing testosterone, increasing prostate weight, increased risk of breast cancer and other hormonally related cancers and hyperactivity.
- BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic food/beverage containers and is found in many everyday products such as; plastic wrap, plastic water and baby bottles, as well as food cans. BPA can leach from these products into our food and beverages thus being ingested
- Polycarbonate (PC) plastics will be labeled with a recycling symbol #7 (although NOT all #7’s will contain PC) and thus, should be avoided
- With fetus', infants and children around puberty being most affected, it is important to incorporate BPA alternatives such as; glass and stainless steel water containers and aluminum containers for juice and other drinks. As well, health food stores often carry hard plastic baby bottles that do NOT contain BPA.
- Avoid canned food whenever you can. Opt for frozen or fresh fruits and vegetables. They are healthier for you this way too! Try and purchase soups and beans in reusable glass jars as well.
Please consult with your Naturopathic Doctor to learn more about protecting yourself when it comes to BPA’s and other environmental toxins.
