Chiropractic Tip of the Month:

According to the American Chiropractic Association, back pain is the second most common reason after colds for seeking medical help. Simply maintaining good posture can help alleviate the problem.

Having good posture is when your body is aligned for maximum efficiency and function. Here are a few tips to help improve your posture:

  1. Start your day by stretching.  All it takes are a few simple moves.  Stand up tall and stretch your arms above your head.  Then "hug your best friend" by wrapping your arms around your body and turn as far as you can to the left, then to the right.

  2. Exercise regularly to keep the abdominal muscles strong to help support the spine.

  3. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes.  Choose shoes that offer good foot support and comfort.  Some styles can affect the body’s centre of gravity.  Flat shoes are better.

  4. Avoid carrying purses or briefcases on one side particularly if they are heavy.  Instead invest in a backpack that has padded adjustable straps so that the load can be equally distributed.

  5. Avoid cradling the phone between your head and shoulder.  It is much better to use the speakerphone or hold the phone with your hand.

  6. Sleep supported on a firm mattress and avoid sleeping on your stomach.  Instead sleep on your back or side with proper support.  Avoid overstuffed pillows and invest instead in a well designed one.

Naturopathic Tip of the Month:

Spring Clean Your Home, Spring Clean Your Liver!

Ingredients:

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, spring is a time to cleanse and support the liver, one of our major detoxifying organs. The liver is responsible for a number of the body’s functions including: detoxifying medications and supplements, manufacturing proteins, packaging cholesterol for proper elimination by the body, storage of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and aids in digestion by producing bile. While there are many things you can do to improve liver health, certain foods are especially suited to aid the liver in carrying out its functions optimally. To aid in detoxifying your liver this spring, eat as many of the following bitter foods as possible:

  • rye, romaine lettuce, radicchio, asparagus, amaranth, quinoa, citrus peel, lemon, bitter melon, dandelion greens, beets, beet greens, kale, collard greens and rapini.
Visit your Naturopathic Doctor for other ways to detoxify your liver and prepare your body for a healthier summer.
