Chiropractic Tip of the Month:
Coffee Facts
A report that combined data from 9 large studies showed that people who drank 4-6 cups of coffee a day were 28% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Drinking more than 6 cups each day reduced the risk by 35%.
Two cups of coffee can improve endurance performance in activities such as running, cycling and cross-country skiing. Coffee also stimulates the brain and enhances mental alertness, particularly if you spread your intake out over the course of the day.
Studies suggest that excess caffeine can boost blood pressure and heart rate, a concern for people with high blood pressure and heart disease. In postmenopausal women who don't get enough calcium, consuming 450mg of caffeine per day - about three 8-ounce cups of coffee - has been linked with having a lower bone density. (Caffeine increases the amount of calcium your kidneys excrete in the urine.)
During pregnancy, women are advised to consume no more than 300 mg a day but some experts suggest a stricter limit of 200 mg.

Naturopathic Tip of the Month: How Good is Your Multi Vitamin?
An independent study was conducted on over 500 hundred Nutritional Supplements in the United States and Canada. Currently in Canada there is no strong regulating government body for the preparation of "natural products". Therefore not all supplements are created equal and it is up to the consumer to do their research on what companies are reputable. Here are a few surprising examples of the low absorption rate of some of Canada's most popular Multi Vitamins:
- Centrum Select for Adults Over 50 = 5.0% absorbed (therefore 95% is waste)
- Jaimeson Adults 50+ Vita Vim = 4.4 % absorbed.
- Life Brand Optimum 50+ = 5.0% absorbed.
Consult your Naturopathic Health Care provider to find out how well absorbed your multi vitamin is and what brand is best for you.
