Naturopathic Tip of the Month: Toxic Fish

Naturopathic Tip of the Month: Toxic Fish
With so much information out there about the dangers of heavy metals in fish, it’s hard to know what type and how much fish to consume. Summer is a great time to enjoy the health benefits of fish – most are grill-able, they provide protein and omega 3 fatty acids and are a great way to vary up our diets. Check out the list below for a few of the healthiest and not- so-healthy options to choose from.
Safe to eat (low in mercury) = canned/wild pacific/sockeye salmon, anchovies, sardines, arctic char, atlantic mackerel, herring, canned light yellowfin tuna and rainbow trout – safe to consume 1-2x per week
Avoid or rarely consume (due to higher mercury and PCB levels) = tuna steak, pickerel (pike, sauger, walleye, yellow and zander), marlin and escolar – should not be consumed more than 1x per month
Visit a Naturopathic Doctor to find out more about heavy metals, fish and the healthiest food options for you and your family.
