Temporal Mandibular Joint Disease (TMJ)

Temporal Mandibular Joint disease (TMJ) describes acute and chronic dysfunction of the joint between the temporal bone and the mandible. This dysfunction may involve the muscles of mastication, nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones, connective tissue, and teeth.

Did you know that studies suggest that TMJ dysfunction affects approximately 40% of the U.S. population, with a 4:1 ratio of female to male.

People with TMJ dysfunction would commonly experience pain in the head, neck, ear, and jaw regions. Sufferers may notice a reduced ability to open or close their mouth, an asymmetric opening of the mouth or even noisy clicking or popping sounds during meal time. Earaches, headaches are common as well. They may also experience auditory issues such as hearing loss on the affected side and may present symptoms of tinnitus or dizziness.
